Here’s a confession: I am a snack addict. I get hungry every three to four hours – and if I don’t eat anything, after four hours I will get moody, and after five hours without food at the latest, I will turn into a terrible, very grumpy person. And no matter what I’ve had for lunch, I will, reliably, crave a snack at 4pm. I get especially moody if I don’t have anything healthy at hand, because if there’s one thing I hate, it’s eating bad food because there isn’t anything else available. To avoid this, I always try to have a healthy snack with me or stored somewhere nearby.
I have already shared some of my favourite healthy snacks in my post about New Year’s beauty and health, but I thought the subject was worth more attention. So here we go.
1. ENERGY BALLS
Easy to make yourself, nutritious and very delicious. All you need: dates, nuts or almonds, chia or other seeds, vanilla, cinnamon, maca or cocoa powder and a bit of water or fresh orange juice. Mix all the ingredients in a food processor and make little balls form the dough. You can roll the balls in coconut flakes, cocoa or maca powder, or hemp or chia seeds if you like. When you store them in the fridge you can keep them for about a week.
2. CINNAMON POPCORN
Here’s a snack I like to eat in the evening, while watching a film or netflix series or reading a book. Super easy to make: just use organic popcorn kernels and heat them in a pan with a spoonful of organic coconut oil. Keep the lid on, so the popcorn doesn’t fly all around your kitchen. While heating the kernels shake the pan regularly (with the lid on), until all kernels are popped. Then sprinkle cinnamon on the popcorn. Et voilà!
3. RAW CHOCOLATE
As much as I love making my own snacks, sometimes you don’t have the time or a chocolate craving appears out of nowhere. For these occasions I like to buy raw, organic chocolate from the nearby organic supermarket.
I recently discovered the chocolate covered goji berries and coconut from Veganz. Lovechock has long been a favourite of mine. Roo’bar is a great pre-workout snack. And Raw Halo is the British raw chocolate brand I heard about via Instagram.
4. RICE/SPELT CAKES WITH PB AND BANANA
Here’s a good alternative to supersweet cookies: organic wholegrain rice cakes (or the ones made from spelt) with organic peanut butter and banana. I like to sprinkle raw cocoa nibs on them, but you could also use chia seeds, pine nuts or berries.
